Please join us in thanking the Carl M. Freeman Foundation, which has committed a transformational leadership gift to support the new Lower School, diversity initiatives, and The Landon Fund. The current Middle School will be renovated to become the Freeman Family Lower School as part of Landon’s campus master plan.

Nick Freeman ’09 is a trustee for the foundation, which assists nonprofit organizations throughout the region. His mother, Michelle Freeman, is the foundation chair and president. Michelle said, “Three of my favorite people – my late husband, Josh ’83, and my sons, Nick and Ben ’20 – graduated from Landon. Their teachers have been there for them. Their friends have been there for our whole family. They’re all great men – and I want the School to continue producing great men.”

Nick explained, “I came to Landon in fifth grade, and I’m excited about how a new Lower School will impact boys in their initial time at Landon. Having the right spaces will help provide the experiences boys need at such an impressionable age. In addition, I cherished the diverse group of boys I went to school with, and there’s always room to grow and to support Landon’s value of diversity. Finally, our gift will support The Landon Fund because the fund bridges the operating gap between tuition and the actual cost of providing a Landon education each year. Maintaining the fund throughout this capital campaign is one of the most important things the School can do.”

Nick is a member of the Landon Board of Trustees and the Campaign Committee. He previously served on the Landon Alumni Board. He graduated from Georgetown University, served as an acquisitions analyst at a REIT in New York City, and is now Vice President at the Carl M. Freeman Companies, a real estate development and management firm based in Rockville.

Michelle is the owner and CEO of the Carl M. Freeman Companies and the founding chair of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, which supports the arts in the Delmarva region. A partner in Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics, she is one of 13 female NBA team owners. In addition to her philanthropy, Michelle has served on numerous Boards, including the Landon Board of Trustees.

“If you love something, you have to give time, money, and talent to ensure it remains,” she said. “This gift will help make sure Landon is still here for my grandchildren.”

This is the second major gift the foundation has made to Landon. Nick and Michelle noted that when choosing entities to support, they look for organizations that will be good stewards. “With Landon, you know your support will be taken to heart and leveraged to support students,” explained Michelle.

“Landon leadership believes so deeply in the need for this campus transformation that it has truly gone from idea to reality,” said Nick. “It will take all of us – and it will happen.”
